With pain, stiffness and inflammation in your hip or lower back, tasks as simple as bending to pick something can be extremely frustrating. But you can always prioritize transformation and choose a life that’s free from pain and trouble, with a safe and effective orthopedic procedure like hip replacement.

Dallas Orthopedic Associates is your route to ready – with you on your road to physical freedom!

What is hip replacement?

Hip replacement, or a hip replacement surgery is a medical procedure where a surgeon partially or completely replaces the hip joint with prostheses. Hip replacement surgeons often refer to this surgery as total hip replacement, total hip replacement protocol, and titanium hip replacement.

How do you know if you need a hip replacement?

At Dallas Orthopedic Associates, we use these six early signs and symptoms to assess whether a patient needs a hip replacement. If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, it’s definitely the time to see a hip replacement surgeon near you. Check if:

  1. You feel severe pain in hip tissues lasting longer than 3 months
  2. You experience hip stiffness, swelling, inflammation and occasional spasms
  3. You feel extreme discomfort and/or friction in movement and performing routine activities
  4. You have tried most of the non-surgical methods including medicines, supplements and exercise
  5. You have been diagnosed with arthritis or joint damage
  6. You had an injury resulting in hip dislocation or fracture

FAQs About Hip Replacement Surgery

Which method of hip replacement is the best?

While your doctor is the most suitable professional to decide which type of hip replacement you should opt for, we believe total hip replacement (also called total hip arthroplasty) is the best and most successful method of hip replacement.

Other hip replacement solutions include partial hip replacement and hip resurfacing.
There are two approaches to performing a hip replacement surgery: anterior hip replacement and posterior hip replacement. Again, your panel comprising primary care doctors, surgeon and nurse are the ideal practitioners to decide the best type and approach of hip replacement for you.

How long does it take to recover after a hip replacement surgery?

The average recovery time after total hip replacement varies from patient to patient and case to case. A patient walking with or without assistance totally depends on the doctors’ recommendation. Most patients, however, are able to walk on their own the same day. Others with absolutely no care at home often take two to three days.
Most patients can get back to routine activities between 10 to 12 weeks after the surgery with the exception of lifting heavy weight. Total recovery after hip replacement surgery can take around 10 months.

What is the main difference between anterior hip replacement and posterior hip replacement?

Anterior hip replacement and posterior hip replacement are two different approaches to total hip replacement surgery. In anterior hip replacement, a surgeon implants an artificial hip from the front, making the smallest incision and removing damaged bones and cartilage.
In posterior hip replacement, a surgeon removes the bone from the back and implants the artificial hip.
While the output in both of these approaches is the same, anterior hip replacement is recommended, slightly more complex, yet allows for shorter hospital stays and less restrictions in the long-term.

How long does hip replacement surgery take?

Hip replacement surgery takes an average of 1 hour and 30 minutes excluding the preparation time. We follow similar timelines for hip replacement surgery in Plano, Mesquite and Dallas clinics.

Do I need a hip replacement xray when visiting the doctor?

It is not mandatory to bring a hip replacement xray or assistive test or lab report when visiting a hip replacement surgeon in Dallas. However, you are recommended to follow your primary doctor’s advice if you have made your initial visits and have been suggested/asked to appear for a hip replacement xray.

Can you suggest any alternatives to hip replacement surgery?

There are three different types of hip replacement surgeries: total hip replacement (arthroplasty), partial hip replacement and hip resurfacing. These are NOT alternatives to one another.
More importantly, your doctor can evaluate your physical, emotional and orthopedic conditions to decide between conventional to less complex hip replacement methods for you.
Patients often consider exercises, medicines and supplements, diets and meal programs and therapies as alternatives to hip replacement surgery. Self-assessment at some stages is not recommended and these factors can not eliminate the need for a hip replacement surgery in most cases.

Testimonials

With this timely hip replacement and postsurgery care, I got back to daily activities in literally two weeks. I can’t believe I am rejoining my tennis camp next week.

My three years of severe pain ended with a hip replacement surgery in Plano, and I’m so glad I trusted these professionals for the procedure. From preoperative guidance to postsurgical care, their comprehensive program covers almost everything you need to know. Even if you have mild orthopedic conditions instead of a hip issue, I recommend visiting Dallas Ortho.

I had an extremely satisfying experience at Dallas Orthopedic Associates with my total hip replacement protocol. That’s partly because of the cooperative staff that was assigned to me, the nurses, the surgeon and my primary care doctor.
